Barneys is a little local church with a big heart for our neighbours.

Jesus’ first recorded teaching is that ‘the kingdom of God has come near’ (Mark 1:15). Wherever Jesus, the King, goes, broken lives are transformed, and people come to trust and follow him.

Jesus calls his church to be an outpost of this Kingdom – to work alongside the poor and vulnerable around us to see transformation in our local community, and to share the good news of God’s love for all people in Jesus.

Many of us pursue this vision together on teams working with those in need, by multiplying smaller communities for people of all ages and backgrounds, or running courses for those who are curious about the life and teaching of Jesus.

Love Your Neighbour Teams

  • Mission to Social Housing in Macarthur Street

The Barneys team has been visiting residents in a social housing block near Barneys for over 8 years & have formed a solid foundation of friendships. The aim of this outreach is to build relationships with the residents and share God’s love with them by providing support where needed & creating opportunities to talk about Jesus through door knocking, organising BBQs & afternoon teas & holding a range of creative activities in the courtyard.

When: 1st Sunday of the month – 2.30-5pm

  • Pancake Street Mission

The Barneys team make pancakes for passersby which serves as a platform to get to know our neighbours, chat about Jesus, minister to people’s needs as appropriate & tell people about Barneys. This is street evangelism raw & simple & we love seeing how the Holy Spirit works through us each month.

Where: Barneys entrance onto Parramatta Road.

    When: Once a month on Saturdays 9.30am-1pm – includes set-up, pack-down & debrief – kitchen opens 10.30-12.30.

  • Red Frogs

Red Frogs Australia recognises that the culture of young people is dominated by alcohol. Barneys members partner with Red Frogs providing relief, safety and support to young people at Schoolies week on the Gold Coast and at university campuses around Barneys.

Mission in Community

  • St Barnabas Football Club

St Barnabas Football Club, home of The Flames, is based out of Barneys. In the 1930s, a man named Arthur Stace visited the church, and was so moved by the good news of Jesus that he chalked the word eternity all over Sydney for decades to come. We are driven as a club by the same good news of Jesus.

We are a club for everyone. As a club we prioritise the enjoyment of football as a gift from God, regardless of the result. We also pride ourselves on playing tough, competitive and fair football.

  • Thursday Beach Trips

Sydney is a coastal city, and whether you are studying or working here, plenty of us love to spend time at the beach. But public transport from the city and inner west isn’t always beach friendly.

So every Thursday morning at 6am (summer and winter!) we carpool to Clovelly for an early morning swim, returning in time for study or work. It’s simply the best way to start the day, and inclusive of church-goers and non-church-goers alike.

  • Petersham Park Soccer

On Monday evenings at 6pm Barneys members meet together at Petersham Park to play soccer and connect with others who live in Petersham and surrounding suburbs.

  • Bouldering

A number of Barneys members climb together on Saturday mornings at a local bouldering gym.
